What is the Better Way Mindset?

I started in the industry on my knees, working as an installer at the age of 17.

I watched designers bring order to chaos — transforming messy rooms into spaces of function and beauty. But, ironically, the business of design itself is not well-designed. There are too many moving parts. On the front end, designers are creating striking transformations, where every item has a place and purpose; every detail is intentional.

On the back end, we are making too many calls, driving back and forth, juggling several things at once, and bending over backward to meet the needs of our clients. There are so many details to keep track of, and mistakes are costly.

We strain against the inconsistency of the business. We’re either swamped, wondering how we’ll get it all done, or struggling to market ourselves and find new projects.

I saw smart, creative entrepreneurs discouraged by the pains of the business, and I thought, “There’s got to be a better way.”
This better way mindset inspired me to open up my own full-service showroom in 1995, Exceptional Flooring Concepts.

Now I sense the industry shifting again. As we all know, change can be scary, but if we meet the change with courage and determination, we don’t just survive. We thrive.

Together we CAN elevate the industry.

Better profits allow us to do better work, because we aren’t so stressed out. It also means we can provide better, high-quality service to our clients. When we raise our standards as individual business people, we raise the standards of the profession as a whole.

This leads to more respect and appreciation, allowing us to charge what we are worth and generate more business. I believe in elevating the professional standards and reputation of the Trades.
